Jute rope may be dyed. Here is our method originally taught by Ero Ouji, substituting sake for bioethanol.

For a bucket dye, we recommend simplicol Fabric Dye expert and simplicol Colour Fixative expert or similar. For strong colours double the recommended amount for jute.

Water should be mixed 10:1 with bioethanol as the alcohol content improves dye penetration.

We strongly recommend using long-arm rubber gloves and dyeing in an area where splashes can be easily cleaned.

For an example 8 x 8 meter set, cut 8 lengths each 8.2 meters and overhand knot the ends. Half fill a bucket with the hottest water from a household tap mixed with the bioethanol. Add the ropes and top up until covered.

Agitate the ropes and liquid regularly for 1 hour. Drain in a metal sink. Fill with water, soak and agitate, drain and repeat.

Fill with the hottest water from a household tap mixed with the fixer. Agitate the ropes and liquid regularly for an hour. Fully drain.

When dry, singe, lightly oil by running loosely through the palm, insert your closures or end knots at the correct position, and cut off the original process knots.

Hang for 48 hours to settle and absorb the oil.
